Laing O’Rourke tops October league

8 Nov 16 A single contract brought some colour to the cheeks of the recently pale-looking Builders’ Conference BCLive contracts league table in October.

The Builders’ Conference registered 656 construction contracts awarded during October 2016 to 380 different companies. The total value of these was £4,298m, a 31% rise on September’s £3,270m total, but still down on the October 2015 total of £4,445m.

Laing O’Rourke’s £1bn contract to redevelop Edinburgh’s St James Centre propelled it to a clear first place in the October 2016 league, way ahead of second placed Mace, which signed four contracts during the month, totalling nearly £230m.

In third place was McLaren ÂÜÀòÔ´´, thanks to a £130m contract for the construction of Amazon’s new fulfilment centre at Tilbury in Essex.

Carillion claimed fourth spot with a haul of seven contracts, the largest of which – valued at £96m – is for the construction of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass for Lincolnshire County Council. Morgan Sindall maintained its reputation for capturing the largest number of contracts – 20 in October, with a combined value of £132.7m – to take fifth place. Robertson Group was sixth thanks largely to a £100m contract award for the construction of a new exhibition centre in Aberdeen.

Housing was once again the busiest sector, accounting for £1.16bn of the £4.38bn total.
