Laing O’Rourke team scoops $417m Australian highway

12 Jan 17 A joint venture between Laing O’Rourke and BGC Contracting has landed a AU$417m (£253m) road construction contract in Western Australia (WA).

The contract for the central section of NorthLink WA central section has been awarded by Main Roads WA to the Great Northern Connect (GNC) joint venture.

The GNC team will design and construct more than 20km of highway and four interchanges, including 14 road bridges, three footbridges and new cycling and pedestrian facilities.

The NorthLink WA central section is the second package of a programme of works to upgrade Tonkin Highway to freeway standard and extend the link north.

The highway will provide the northern link into Perth for heavy freight traffic and create direct access for growing suburbs such as Ellenbrook.

BGC Contracting CEO Greg Heylen said the company was particularly pleasing to be building on an existing strong relationship with Laing O鈥橰ourke to deliver such a vital infrastructure project. 鈥淎s opportunities in the mining sector have declined in recent years, BGC Contracting has refocused its energies on the diversification of the business with a strong emphasis in the public infrastructure sector and this latest success is a satisfying endorsement of this strategy,鈥 he added.

Construction is expected to start in the middle of this year and is scheduled to be complete by mid-2019.
