The Piazza Learning Centre will house teaching facilities including two laboratories, a 350-seat auditorium and a 100-seat lecture theatre, as well as a restaurant and staff offices.
The 6,800 m2 building is Interserve's second with the University of York and part of a wider 拢27m scheme on the campus.
Work on site has now begun this week and piling starts on 12th September. The whole project is scheduled to complete in November 2017.
Interserve is supported on the project by Race Cottam Associates, Curtins Consulting and NG Bailey.
Interserve divisional director John Gittins said: 鈥淲e are looking forward to further strengthening our relationship with the University of York as it continues to both expand and renew its facilities.聽 At Interserve we are committed to investing in the communities in which we work and we will be continuing to engage with the local supply chain as well as creating new job opportunities for local people.鈥
The new building, designed by BDP, will also be home to the university's International Pathway College (IPC), as well as providing additional teaching space for Campus East. The International Pathway College is a joint venture between the University of York and professional training provider Kaplan that provides academic preparation programmes for international students before they begin studies at the university.
IPC director Matthew Perry said: 鈥淭his will be a fantastic teaching and learning space for staff and students and is indicative of the scale of ambition at the University of York and our confidence in the IPC's ability to attract students from all over the world.聽 We're already looking forward to moving in.鈥
